Fields, Osgood and Company, Boston

This publisher printed a number of Mayne Reid books between 1869 and 1871. When Howard Ticknor withdrew from Ticknor and Fields in the fall of 1868, James R. Osgood joined Fields to form Fields, Osgood and Co. It succeeded Ticknor, Fields (1868) and was succeeded by James R. Osgood and Company in January, 1871. All of the Mayne Reid titles are reprints.

The 16 mo. books had the same format as the Ticknor and Fields 16 mo. books. Each book is blindstamped with a spine that has gold gilt lettering and picture which is different for each title. Covers have been seen in blue, red, and green.

None of the 12 mo. books have been seen. It is assumed that they are also of the same format as the previously published Ticknor and Fields’ books but this will need confirmation.

The Fields, Osgood titles are much scarcer than the first edition Ticknor and Fields’ books.
